GRANDMA's Garden

Grandma’s Garden is a mixed media piece depicting Lauryn’s memories in her grandmother’s garden and her connection with nature. By drawing the sunflowers, hummingbirds, ladybugs, and strawberry plants with Prismacolor Pencils, Lauryn captured the beauty in nature. In addition, she showed how influential her art is in her writing and fashion. The background was digitally made on Procreate, and the final product was put together meticulously on Adobe Photoshop. The various objects represent different memories from Lauryn’s childhood, such as her mother nicknaming her ladybug or the dozens of ladybugs she’d find in her grandma’s old house. Sunflowers are her grandmother’s favorite flowers, and Lauryn used to wear a sunflower apron when making breakfast at her grandma’s house when she was little. Hummingbirds always visited her grandmother’s garden, and her grandmother would always plant strawberries annually.

Grandma's Garden was created in a Surface Research class at Virginia Commonwealth University. The creation of the art project took place in the Fall Semester of 2021. The assignment was to create a personal wallpaper/print that expressed the identity of the artist, while making sure that its dimensions were 19 x 20 inches. The background in Grandma's Garden is a repetitive pattern of a strawberry plant. In the foreground, the hummingbirds, ladybugs, sunflowers, and strawberry plants were drawn with Prismacolor pencils. This pattern was put together to create a diagonal argyle pattern.

After students created their personal wallpapers in the Surface Research class, they had to create a room digitally of what a room would like like with their wallpaper in it. Then, they had to put an object in the middle of the room that also represented their character. Lauryn chose three garments to put in the center of her room to show how fashion is a huge part of her identity. She imagined that her room would be a showcase to show her future collections and that the patterns from the wallpaper would also be implemented in the gowns.
