Melanin Power was created in Lauryn's spring semester in Virginia Commonwealth University's Project Seminar Painting class. Students were to set up and paint a collage with acrylic paint on a 16 x 20-inch canvas. By implementing stickers that capture Lauryn's interests- science, Victoria's Secret PINK brand, and cultural diversity- while incorporating colorful paper and sticky notes, she was able to capture what her desk looks like. Lauryn often uses sticky notes to stay organized and sticks stickers on her notebooks. She thought that it would be interesting to make a collage of different types of paper and supplies she uses at her desk.
